WINGATE’S CANCIÓN DE LA NOCE
Created as a gift for a friend of the composer, the main thematic material of this episodic canción was alphabetically-derived (in the same manner as the Kleetüden theme) from the honoree’s name and nickname, and elaborately text-painted around one of Neruda’s sonnets. Accompanied by a wildly virtuosic solo cello, the vocal line demands a dark dramatic soprano range of G2 to C5. The work received its premiere in a private performance in New York City on July 13th, 2008, with the composer at the cello, accompanying soprano Annette Peterson.
